As part of the The Transport UK Group, West Midlands Trains delivers around 1,300 train journeys a day, for more than 60 million passengers a year, across our two brands - West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway.
We are committed to delivering a safe and reliable train service, by investing in our fleet of trains, stations and employees. As part of this investment we are looking to recruit a Train Shunter, on a full-time, permanent basis, based in Tyseley.
The post holder will ensure that the train units arriving, departing and stabling at Depots are dealt with safely, efficiently and as instructed by the person in charge. This is a safety critical role, therefore having the ability to follow rules and regulations is essential.
What does the job involve?
- Liaising with relevant individuals in charge and the signal box for control of train movements
- Marshall and couple train units - as directed
- Reporting of any train defects and train arrivals and departures
- Controlling the arrival and departure of trains to depot - liaising with relevant colleagues, as required
- Recording the number and position of train units and updating the Status Board
- Maintaining and compiling records & logs
- Being the point of contact for Network Rail, train operations staff, contractors and visitors, to operational areas
What skills and experience do I need to do the job?
- Be safety conscious – able to follow rules and procedures
- An ability to communicate clearly and confidently, both in writing and verbally – at all levels
- Demonstrating an ability to work on your own initiative
- Ideally, an understanding of the rail industry and/or rolling stock
