An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Merseyrail within the HR team as we are looking to recruit a talented and enthusiastic L&D Manager that will support the delivery of the L&D arm of the People Strategy.

It is an exciting time to be joining Merseyrail and the L&D function as we are shortly about to implement a fantastic new fleet of trains to transform rail travel in the Liverpool City Region.

You will be responsible for providing expert advice and supporting a range of first-class learning and development services that will equip our people with the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to realise their potential and play a key role in delivering Merseyrail’s business strategy.

The role

Working as an L&D specialist within the HR function, you will have responsibility for;

  • The design, development and delivery of all competence-based training
  • Supporting the Senior Learning & Development Manager in maintaining our Internal Quality Assurance Framework
  • Embedding a training evaluation process of all L&D activity
  • Ensure effective records of all L&D activities are maintained
  • Implementing a new learning management system that focuses on a blended-learning approach
  • Developing and implementing initiatives and procedures to promote employee development
  • Embedding a coaching and mentoring scheme throughout the business
  • Ensuring the business utilises the apprenticeship levy to support employee competence and development
  • Supporting the Senior Learning & Development Manager in developing a suite of development training that supports the outputs of the PDR/121 process
  • Embedding a training evaluation process of all L&D activity


You will be a professional, proactive, and creative L&D Manager who prides themselves on the delivery of an excellent and flexible L&D service.  As a person you will be confident, highly organised, engaging, and adaptable.  You will identify opportunities to continually improve engagement with L&D across the business helping us to achieve a culture of learning.  

What you'll need to succeed 

  • To be considered for this role we are looking to hear from enthusiastic L&D/Training professionals.
  • Previous L&D/Training experience is essential.
  • You will be resourceful with a can-do approach to Training Needs Analysis, design, delivery and provision of expert advice and guidance on appropriate learning methods.  You will have experience in supporting on the delivery of training using a blended learning approach and have the ability to provide training to employees throughout the business. 
  • Ability to plan own workload and manage a number of activities simultaneously.
  • Although your main location will be Rail House, Liverpool, there is also an element of homeworking and remote working throughout the Liverpool city region.
