Resident Engineer

Birmingham/Derby

Following on from the award of West Midlands Trains franchise, we are dedicated to giving people and businesses the rail service they’ve always wanted.  We’re investing £1 billion into the region’s network, providing new and smartly refurbished trains, better stations, extra benefits and cheaper travel.  London North-western Railway (LNR) and West Midlands Railway (WMR) are 2 new rail brands to the UK rail market, operating since December 2017. 

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Resident Engineer on a 2 year fixed-Term contract based in both Birmingham and Derby. As a Resident Engineer you will be reporting to the joint project Manager.  You will ensure that the OEM delivers a product that aligns with the outputs of the design review process complies with the agreed design and contracted technical specification and is cognisant of the risks identified in the design phase

Key Accountabilities:

  • Performing formal and informal inspections of all systems and features of the vehicles to ensure these are produced to the desired quality, finish and to the agreed design.
  • Carrying out process audits and ensuring actions and recommendations are addressed.
  • Attending and witnessing factory type and routine tests to ensure these are conducted in line with the agreed test procedures and the results are acceptable.
  •  Providing day-to-day representation of the project in the supplier’s facilities to support the project manager and project engineer.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Experience of new train manufacturer and introduction in the UK
  • Quality Inspection processes for new trains, inc FAI, Acceptance, type testing.
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Good Verbal and Written communication
  • Glass case inspection, both writing and application
  • Technical understanding of how new trains work
  • Standards Management
  • Engineering knowledge – engineering qualification required         
  • · Ability to communicate and influence effectively with peers and senior leaders.
  • Ability to establish a course of action for self and others, managing time, resources and surrounding circumstances to deliver objectives
  •  Ability to manage effectively within a real time environment
  • Good team work, high MS word and Excel competence, ability to manage risks and understand problems
  • Decision maker and taker, capable of working on own initiative   
  • Ability to work under high pressure and challenging deadlines;
  • Full-time availability, possibly also during antisocial hours
