An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Service Manager in our Engineering Department at our Hayes Depot. The successful applicant will report to the Fleet Manager and will be responsible for the effective management and development of the engineering team as well as liaising with the Fleet Manager, Area Planner, other Engineering Service Managers and workshop staff to ensure the activities of the engineering department are delivered consistently, safely and punctually in line with specified targets and contractual obligations.

The Role:

  • Have full people management responsibilities for the engineering team and all workshop activities during the managed shift.
  • To ensure that the Engineering and where applicable Health and Safety and Environmental Policies are upheld by vigilant monitoring, and where shortcomings are identified relayed to the Fleet Manager.
  • Ensuring all vehicles are serviced, thoroughly maintained and well presented in strict accordance with Company procedures, DVSA requirements whilst complying with agreed budgets.
  • Ensuring that all external contractors are managed to Abellio ways of working and that all contractors carry a competency passport prior to engagement.
  • Report to the Fleet Manager any discrepancies found during the shift relating to ISO 9001 system or HS&E policy.
  • Undertake through supervision, vehicle and staff quality inspections to confirm the standard of engineering maintenance work meets the Company/Engineering Policy standards ensuring a minimum of 10% of the fleet is audited each month and Action plans implemented where necessary that will promptly address problems highlighted.    
  • Ensure all reported defects for vehicles/buildings/plant etc. is resolved as efficiently and effectively as is possible, with no effect to the service network, and vehicle safety.
  • Monitor vehicle reliability and identify problems, ensuring successful remedial action is taken in order that service failure does not exceed the prescribed targets.
  • Report to the Fleet Manager any deficiencies relating to company Workshop/Depot plant and equipment to ensure that they are adequately maintained and meet Company and Legal targets.
  • Promptly report any stock irregularities with remedial action taken.    
  • Have a proactive attitude to non- compliance issues.

The Candidate:

  • Excellent understanding of the road passenger transport sector, including all relevant legal and external regulations and requirements for the operation of passenger carrying vehicles.
  • Excellent working knowledge of all daily site procedures, engineering processes, health and safety
  • Regulations, DVSA standards, and people management practices.
  • Have a passion to lead by example while motivating and developing teams to achieve high standards of performance.
  • Flexible approach to working hours and able to attend out-of-hours where required to meet service delivery and vehicle audits, and to be able to respond quickly to any “on-call” requirements.
  • Have a duty of care for the health and safety of yourself and your colleagues at all times, including a duty to report unsafe acts or omissions to safety. You should always follow all safety instructions in respect of how you undertake your role within the Business.
  • Experience of managing, developing, leading and motivating staff to produce high quality work.
  • Membership of a recognised professional engineering body is desirable.
  • Able to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and work in a collaborative manner.
