An exciting opportunity has arisen for Shift Managers in our Engineering Department at our Walworth Depot. The successful applicant will report to the Engineering Manager and will be responsible for the effective management and development of the engineering team as well as liaising with the engineering manager, planner, other engineering shift managers and workshop staff to ensure the activities of the engineering department are carried out to a high standard.

The Role:

  • Have full people management responsibilities and actively engage with all shop floor personnel to develop and improve skills by continuous monitoring and mentoring.

  • To deliver a consistently reliable, safe, high quality and punctual service in line with specified targets, contractual obligations and commercial objectives.

  • Have full responsibility for all workshop activities being undertaken during the managed shift.

  • To ensure that the Engineering and where applicable Health and Safety and Environmental Policies are upheld by vigilant monitoring, and where shortcomings are identified these must be relayed to the Engineering Manager.

  • Ensuring all vehicles are regularly serviced thoroughly maintained and well presented in strict accordance with Company procedures, VOSA requirements and agreed budgets.

  • Ensuring that all external contractors are managed to the Abellio way of working.

  • Ensure that all contractors carry a competency passport prior to engagement.

  • Undertake through supervision, vehicle and staff quality inspections to confirm the standard of engineering maintenance work meets the Company/Engineering Policy standards.

  • Ensure all reported defects for vehicles/buildings/plant etc is resolved as efficiently and effectively as is possible, with no effect to the service network, and vehicle safety.

  • Monitor vehicle reliability and identify problems, ensuring remedial action is taken and is successful, inorder that service failure does not exceed the prescribed targets.

  • Promptly report any stock to irregularities with remedial action taken to overcome problems or shortcomings.

  • Have a proactive attitude to non- compliance issues.

  • Have a duty of care for the health and safety of yourself and your colleagues at all times, including a duty to report unsafe acts or omissions to safety.

  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with the role

The Candidate:

  • Excellent understanding of the road passenger transport sector, including all relevant legal and external regulations and requirements for the operation of passenger carrying vehicles.

  • Excellent working knowledge of all daily site procedures, engineering processes, health and safety

    Regulations, VOSA standards, and people management practices.

  • Have a passion to lead by example while motivating and developing teams to achieve high standards of performance.

  • Flexible approach to working hours – able to attend out-of-hours where required to meet service delivery and vehicle audits, and to be able to respond quickly to any “on-call” requirements.

  • Experience of managing, developing, leading and motivating staff to produce high quality work.

  • Membership of a recognised professional engineering body is desirable.

  • Able to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and work in a collaborative manner.
